Randomized trials tell us what happened in the trial. But how far can those findings extend into routine care?
We are pleased to share a new paper in Epidemiology, first-authored by our colleague Jessica Young.
Using data from VALIDATE-SWEDEHEART and Swedish healthcare registries, the study extended trial inferences to two clinically relevant target populations:
🔹 The full trial-eligible population, regardless of trial enrolment
🔹 The broader treatment-candidate population, regardless of trial eligibility
The first addresses generalizability: do the trial findings apply to all individuals who could have participated?
The second addresses transportability: do they extend to the broader population considered for these treatments in routine care?
The study provides a practical example of how randomized trial data and real-world data can be combined to examine where trial evidence applies beyond the enrolled population.
